FAQS

Why is Orthodontic treatment important?

Orthodontic treatment is about both esthetics and health. A beautiful smile is a boost to one’s self confidence. However, it can also be a crucial step to prevent more serious dental issues in the future. Misaligned teeth gradually wear down the enamel of the teeth and put undue stress on the jaw. This is not to mention, the increased difficulty in cleaning crowded or misaligned teeth. Issues in the jaw can make it difficult to speak, chew, or swallow. Orthodontic treatment is an investment in your future.

How long is orthodontic treatment?

Length of time is on a case by case basis. The duration depends on the amount of care that is needed, as each patient is a unique case. Your doctor will give you an estimated time of completion. Remember that any rules or restrictions are necessary to avoid lengthening the time of orthodontic treatment.

When should I get braces?

Under normal circumstances, orthodontic treatment is not administered until most of the adult teeth have grown in. During this time, between 8-14 years of age, you can come in and consult your orthodontist to see if braces are right for you or your child. Your orthodontist will review the best time to start treatment during your initial consultation.

What are aligners?

Aligners are custom made mouthpieces that go over the teeth. A new set is given every 7-14 days, gradually shifting the teeth into your perfect smile.

How are aligners different from braces?

Unlike your braces, aligners are removable. It is easier to floss and there aren’t restrictions on what you can and can’t eat during the treatment.

What happens if I break or lose my retainer?

We understand that accidents happen. Simply call us and set up an appointment to get a new retainer. Our lifetime retainer program ensures that you will have a readily available supply of retainers, should anything happen.

What are the causes of orthodontic problems?

Many problems are genetic, passed down through the family. However, some cases develop due to thumb sucking, mouth-breathing, accidents, or other external factors.

Are there foods I can’t eat while I have braces?

You should avoid: sticky or hard candy, popcorn, nuts, gum, hard taco shells, corn chips, ice, pretzels, nuts, and hard cookies or crackers.

How often will I need to visit my orthodontist?

Your orthodontist will discuss with you how often you should come in. On average, visits will vary between every 6-8 weeks, depending on the stage of the treatment. We also use new technology to offer remote monitoring for those traveling from far or with busy schedules to ensure that your treatment is still being monitored by a specialist, all while reducing the amount of time you need to come into the office.

Do I need to brush my teeth more often while I have braces?

Technically, you can still brush just twice a day; however, it is recommended that you brush after each meal! Food can easily get caught in your braces and the brackets. If left there for too long, it can start the development of white spots or cavities. Diligent brushing will keep your teeth healthy and make cleanings easier.

What are good habits to have while I’m wearing braces?

Keep up with your appointments and don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor. Cut up harder foods into bite sized chunks, like fruits and vegetables. Brush your teeth in circular motions- this will clean off plaque that can build up around the brackets. Brush and floss frequently to keep your gums healthy.

How expensive is orthodontic treatment?

Each patient is unique and the cost depends on the level of care and complexity of treatment. Treatments that are more complicated and longer lasting tend to be more expensive. Luckily, our office is prepared with flexible payment plans to ensure you get the smile you deserve.
